Which Cleaning Machine Should You Hire?

25 Jun 2025

The right cleaning machine depends on what you want to clean. A carpeted room, a sofa and a hard floor need different approaches.

Here’s how to narrow down the options in WhyBuy’s cleaning range, with equipment delivered and collected across London.

For carpeted rooms

Start with our Rug Doctor or Karcher carpet cleaner. Both use cleaning solution and extraction to help lift dirt from suitable carpets.

The Rug Doctor Carpet Cleaner has an upright design and comes with one litre of cleaning solution.

The Karcher Carpet Cleaner comes with one litre of carpet shampoo and an upholstery attachment, making it worth considering when your cleaning list includes both carpets and fabric furniture.

Before choosing, check the carpet manufacturer’s care instructions and the attachments listed on the product page.

For sofas, mattresses and smaller fabric areas

For a job focused on upholstery, consider the Upholstery & Mattress Steam Cleaner.

This portable machine offers Steam, Wash and SteamWash modes, with separate clean and dirty water tanks. One litre of cleaning solution is included.

Check the fabric’s care label before use. Some materials cannot be wet cleaned or exposed to steam, so choose the mode and solution according to the supplied instructions.

For hard floors

Consider the Karcher Hard Floor Cleaner for compatible hard flooring.

Check your flooring manufacturer’s guidance first, particularly for wood, laminate and surfaces that may be sensitive to moisture. A machine suitable for one floor finish may not suit another.

Carpet cleaner or steam cleaner?

A carpet cleaner applies a cleaning mixture and extracts dirty water. A steam cleaner uses steam to clean compatible surfaces.

They are different tools, so choose by the surface and task rather than assuming that steam will suit every material. Our upholstery machine combines several modes, but the fabric’s care instructions still determine which you can use.

Plan your cleaning day

Before booking:

  • Check the surfaces and materials you want to clean.

  • Review the included attachments and cleaning solution.

  • Allow time for preparation, cleaning and drying.

  • Check delivery and collection availability for your dates.

Drying time depends on the material, moisture used and conditions in your home. Leave enough time before furniture is replaced or the room needs to be used.

If you are preparing for a tenancy handover, check any cleaning requirements with your landlord or letting agent. Equipment hire is a self-service option.
